As people, we tend to tweak our interests and dislikes and even mannerisms around groups of other people we know (or don't know). Around your parents, you censor out all the swear words in your vocabulary. Around your friends, you're boisterous and open about your life. In a crowd of people you don't know, you're quiet and keep to yourself.
But there are certain people who have a fear of being hated, or looked down on, or rejected by everyone. These people are made up of a multitude of different personas -- personas they create upon meeting new people or learning new things about certain folk. Whatever they like, the persona likes. Whatever they hate, the persona hates. The real person carefully evaluates their subject, slowly becoming the perfect image of a friend of theirs so they can feel loved, even though it's killing the real one inside, because the persona is just a persona -- not a living truth.
